What It Does
Solves constant-acceleration motion — enter any three of initial velocity, final velocity, acceleration, displacement, and time, and it finds the other two, with the equation it used. Everything runs in your browser.
How to Use It
- Enter exactly three values, leaving two blank.
- Read the two computed values and the equation for each.
- Click Copy on any computed value.
About the SUVAT Equations
Motion under a constant acceleration is described by five “SUVAT” equations relating the initial velocity (u), final velocity (v), acceleration (a), displacement (s), and time (t). Each equation leaves out one of the five variables, so whenever you know any three you can pick the equation that involves your three knowns plus the unknown you want — and solve directly.
Example
u = 0, a = 9.8 m/s², t = 3 s → v = u + at = 29.4 m/s and s = ut + ½at² = 44.1 m.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which equation should I use?
Pick the one that contains your three known quantities plus the unknown you want — each SUVAT equation leaves out exactly one variable. This tool does that selection for you.
Why did solving for time give two answers?
Time can come from a quadratic. Physically, an object thrown upward passes a given height twice — once going up and once coming back down — so both non-negative times are valid.
Do signs matter?
Yes. Velocity, acceleration, and displacement are vectors: a negative acceleration points opposite to the positive direction. Note that v² = u² + 2as gives only the magnitude of the final velocity.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Every calculation runs locally in your browser; nothing you enter is transmitted or stored.
